Honoring Ayden’s Life
Ayden Christopher Stathis was a loving, caring young man who aspired to become a chef. He was passionate for all things relating to food and culinary arts. After he passed away in November 2020, his family and friends established this scholarship to honor and celebrate his vibrant life. This award will provide financial support to students pursuing Ayden’s dream that was cut short. By awarding an annual culinary arts scholarship, we are keeping Ayden’s spirit alive.
"I Got This!"
Ayden was a hands-on learner and absolutely fearless. He thought nothing of immersing himself in projects that most adults would be wary of youngsters taking on. But his persistence and knowing smile won over everyone – young and old. Whether he was helping with home renovations, refining his knife skills in the kitchen, jackhammering rocks in the backyard, or firing up the grill, Ayden would simply smile and say, “I got this.” And he did.
Welcoming Challenges
Ayden jumped at opportunities to try new things, whether it was making a complicated entrée or exploring nature. He was blessed with acute situational awareness and had a positive outlook on the world around him. He was never afraid to be himself and frequently expressed himself through unique hair styles or brightly colored shoes. He voiced his opinions on issues, even when he knew his views weren’t what people wanted to hear.
Welcoming People into His Life
Ayden’s “old school” nature was somewhat of a lost art. He was one of the few kids today who would ride his bike down the street to a neighbor’s house, walk up to the front door, and ask if his friends could come out and play. He was loving and caring, always thinking of others, especially his big brother and little sister. When friends or family came over to his house, he always welcomed them with a smile and handshake or hug.
And He Loved Food
Invariably, Ayden’s eyes widened and his smile broadened when the topic turned to food. He was completely in his element when he was in the kitchen. He was famous for putting his own twist on something as simple as a cup of noodles or jazzing up a more refined dish like lobster and mussels. And, of course, he made sure there were lots of “sides.” Above all, his guacamole was unbelievably delicious and a must-have at every family get together. Ayden dared to try foods that most 12-year-olds would turn away from in fear or disgust. If he wasn’t cooking he was critiquing the plate in front of him, but always in a constructive manner, saying “This is pretty good, but maybe next time add a little less pepper and it’ll be perfect.”
Ayden’s Legacy
It is our hope that Ayden’s dreams will be realized for other young people through this scholarship. The successful applicant will demonstrate not only Ayden’s love of food and the culinary arts, but also reflect the qualities that made him so special in our lives – his courage, persistence, and his respect, love, and care for others.
